Mr Walker (and his "Friday Tie")
ME : Luke. I write this blog to share my teaching life, reflections, and stories. I believe that I was born to teach and work with young people. It's a life's passion for me, not just a career. I like to write and upon numerous occasions I have been accused of being long-winded. So be it, I'm a story-teller at heart. Beyond the classroom I share my life with my lovely wife Jamie. She would describe me as a teacher by day, metalhead/crossfitter/chef extraordinaire by night. I perceive myself as a global citizen and I work hard to better understand the world and my place in it each day. Home is where my heart is, but I originally grew up in a small farm town in Michigan.
FAMILY: Jamie. Easily one of the most clever and creative minds that I've met. She's a writer, photographer, and blogger. Her wonderful talents and input were put to use in the design of this blog! She shares my passion for international expat life, Mexican cuisine, and our Michigan State Spartans. You can read all about her thoughts on her blog: http://inkandadventure.blogspot.tw
INTERNATIONAL TEACHING: How did I end up teaching internationally?
The short version:
I was raised by a globally-minded mother who spent her teenage years attending school in Bangladesh. She felt that her children should experience the world beyond where they grew up. As a result, my interest in seeing the world was peaked at an early age. In my undergrad years I lived and studied in Istanbul and fell in love with the experience of teaching and learning in an international context. Years later after completing my graduate degree, my first few years of teaching in an urban public school district, and an ISS job fair; I found myself in Taiwan. This year marks the beginning of my sixth year of teaching and 3rd in international teaching. In these first few years abroad I have found myself immersed in a vibrant community that has taught me much about myself and my students. Home is where your heart is, and my heart is in international teaching.
THE BLOG DESIGN: As stated before, my wife provided a great deal of input and elbow grease when it came to establishing the visual look of the blog. The composite header image at the top was created by her, and is actually a layered combination of a photo she took of an art piece at the Tokyo-Narita Airport, an edited world map, and a font layer. Believe me, it's not as simple as it sounds :-)
